Born in Pune, Gaikwad is a right-handed batsman who plays as an opener. He started his career playing for the Under-19 team of Maharashtra in the Ranji Trophy. He made his first-class debut for Maharashtra in the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy, and scored a century in his second match.
In December 2018, he was bought by the Indian Premier League team Chennai Super Kings for the 2019 season. He made his IPL debut in 2019 and scored his first century in the tournament, against the Rajasthan Royals.
In August 2019, he was selected in the Indian squad for the 2019–20 season. He made his Test debut against the West Indies in October 2019, and scored his first century in the format against Bangladesh the following month.
Gaikwad is known for his calm and composed demeanour on the field, and is considered one of the most promising young batsmen in the country.
